About me… • Reside on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay • BA from Virginia Wesleyan College, 1996 • Evening Secretary in The Adult Studies Program Office • Cradle Catholic • 13 years of Catholic education • Parishioner of St Gregory the Great – the Benedictine monks in my parish are proud to be associated with the pope’s name choice • Benedict XVI is the sixth pope during my lifetime

  3. Who is the new pope? • The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger • Seasoned German theologian • 78 years of age • Longtime confidant to Pope John Paul II • Appointed as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by John Paul II

  4. When was the new pope chosen? • White smoke rose from the Vatican chimney on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 • Within 24 hours after the Conclave convened • On the fourth ballot – shortest in the past 100 years • Pope Benedict XVI, the 265th pope, appeared before the crowd in St Peter’s Square for the first time on that day

Why the name Benedict? • The new pope’s name honors St Benedict, the patron saint of Europe who, in the sixth century, wrote guidelines for the monastic life, which helped preserve the light of European Christian civilization, and for Pope Benedict XIV who confronted the skepticism and rationalism of the Enlightenment Period, as well as for Pope Benedict XV, who pushed for peace during World War I.
