This is because he figured out that it may have been a large animal that was killed in that location and the small caliber round and that it was recent.
“His eyes made out shadowy outlines of a palatial chateau; it was set on a high bluff, and on three sides of it cliffs dived down to where the sea licked greedy lips in the shadows.” I concluded from this passage that Rainsford is very observant of his surroundings. Also that he is extremely aware when it comes to watching his back and surroundings.
