Warm Up • What drives all human behavior? • What are the 5 stages of personality formation? • What 3 components of personality? • How does ego protect personality from anxiety? • Sexual/Aggressive Urges • Oral – Anal – Phallic – Latency – Genital • Id - Pleasure • Ego – Reality / Balance • Superego – Morality • Defense Mechanisms
Other Psychoanalysts • Carl Jung (Freud’s frenemy) – • Two separate unconscious regions of mind: • Personal unconscious – complexes, feelings, thoughts, memories that guide behavior • Collective unconscious – universal memories of common human past • Archetypes – images/thoughts that have same meaning for all human beings (dreams, art, literature, religion) • Karen Horney - • Suggested males had womb envy • Childhood anxiety caused by sense of helplessness triggers a desire for life and security
Other Psychoanalysts • Alfred Adler (Freud’s student) - • Inborn feelings of inferiority drive us to adapt, dvp skills, master challenges (compensate) • Inferiority Complex – exaggerated sense of inferiority = • Overcompensate (cover up, fake) in attempt to remove feelings of inferiority • Birth Order • First-born, middle child, only • Erik Erikson - • Lifespan approach to dvpt • Psychosocial stages rather than psychosexual stages.
