Gender Inequalities Revision
Childcare • Women still seen as primary carers – this is an obstacle the government need to help women overcome • Forces women out of careers and into lower paid part time work (evidence of women in part-time work could be inserted here) • Move into work in the 5 Cs • Flexible working regulations 2003 and update in 2009 aimed at helping women • Childcare voucher schemes to make childcare more affordable
Pay Gap • Equal Pay Act – Do women now receive the same pay as men? • Evidence of pay gap (Fawcett Society evidence) but how it is at its lowest levels – evidence of this • NWM should help women as they tend to be in lowest paid jobs • Same goes for government decision to move bottom rate of income tax to £10,000
Types of jobs • Glass ceiling – discuss • Sex and Power Report – Women missing from top jobs • Evidence of glass ceiling cracking with women more and more getting into top jobs, more female millionaires etc • Equality Act 2010 allows employers to favour under-represented groups in the workplace such as women in job interviews.
Discrimination • Discrimination should be illegal – Sexual Discrimination Act way back in the 1970s • Females still discriminated against today though, although the situation has much improved • Numbers sacked for being pregnant, difficulty in breaking into politics • Discrimination is not as direct as it was – but women still are ‘punished’ for being mothers as they often can’t work the long hours needed to gain promotion to some of the top jobs • Birmingham City Council case study – female orientated jobs like cleaning were not deemed of equal value to some male jobs like street sweeping
