  6. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES LESSON 669: WARNING AGAINST UNEQUAL YOKE

  7. LESSON 669: WARNING AGAINST UNEQUAL YOKE MEMORY VERSE: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?’’ (2Corinthians 16:14). TEXT:2 Corinthians 6:14-18

  8. SUMMARY (1) In our last study, we learned the following lessons: • Sin attracts God’s judgement; God is merciful and forgives the penitent. • War is no alternative to resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner. • We must avoid presumption and overconfidence in our walk with God. • Our decisions and actions should not be based on God’s permissive will. • We must ask for God’s clear direction in carrying out His assignment. The study of today touches on four points: • Command to separate from the world. • Causes of the unequal yoke. • Consequences of unequal yoke • Call to separation and restoration.

  9. SUMMARY (2) • Command to separate from the world (2 Corinthians 6:14): • Alignment between a believer and an unbeliever in marriage, business, worship, etc. is unequal yoke. God forbids it because it causes backsliding or compromise in faith. • Causes of the unequal yoke (2 Corinthians 6:15,16): • Excessive love for man or material, impatience, wilful disobedience, worldliness, carnality, covetousness and ignorance are some causes of the unequal yoke. • Consequences of the unequal yoke (2 Corinthians 6:17,18): • Unequal yoke leads to compromise and loss of fellowship with God and His favour. • It can lead to personal suffering, loss of property, loss of fortunes and even death. • Call to separation and restoration (2 Corinthians 6:17,18): • All believers are commanded to come out of the world and its ungodly ties.

  10. DISCUSSION

  11. QUESTION 1 What do you understand by the term ’the unequal yoke’? • 2 Corinthians 16:14

  12. QUESTION 2 Explain the contrasts in lifestyles in the text below: • 2 Corinthians 16:14-16 What is their implication for the believer especially in marriage, business, worship or fellowship?

  13. QUESTION 3 From the passages below, mention some causes of the unequal yoke. • 2 Samuel 17:1-4 • Genesis 16:2,3 • Judges 14:3 • 2 Timothy 4:10 • Mark 14:10,11

  14. QUESTION 4 Highlight some consequences of unequal yoke from the references below: • Deuteronomy 7:3,4 • Judges 16:20,21,30a • 1 Samuel 28:6 • 1 Kings 11:3

  15. QUESTION 5 How can the believer be free from the unequal yoke? • 2 Corinthians 6: 17-18 • 2 Timothy 2:19

  16. CONCLUSION • The Christian and the unbeliever are not compatible. Intimacy with sinners corrupts the believer’s life and testimony. It leads to backsliding. • To avoid the unequal yoke, believers should avoid excessive love for man or material, affection, impatience, wilful disobedience and covetousness. • Believers should not isolate themselves from unbeliever whom they are supposed to win: separation is not isolation. • Response to God’s call through repentance and faith brings restoration to favour and fellowship with God.
