Use Of Weather Data In The Investigation Of Ku-Band Fading Events National Spectrum Managers Association Spectrum Management 2005 May 24, 2005 Robert Ferguson - MCI
Overview • The Problem • Satellite System Description • Data Collection Methodology • Satellite • Weather (Rain) • Three Examples – Fade Events Versus Rain Data • Final Comments
The Problem • VSAT Network 2-Way Performance -- Affected By Multiple Factors • Hub Site – Satellite – Terminal • Propagation Conditions (Hub – Satellite, Satellite – Terminal) • Transmission Equipment (14 GHz / 12 GHz) (Receive, Transmit, Antenna) • Interference(Radar Detectors, Sun, Adjacent Satellite, …) • Normal Contention For Shared Network Resources (Service Class Specifies Over-Subscription) • Maintenance, Etc. • Simplified Problem: During Selected Periods Of “Apparent” Degradation,Does Rain On The Downlink Path Appear To Be A Factor?

Overview • C-Language Program Serves As Hyper-Terminal Emulator • Emulator Sends Periodic CLI-Management Commands To IDU Via RS232 And Generates “Pings” To Hub-Site Server (Spain) Via LAN • Basic Downlink Data (S/N, BER, etc) And “Ping” Times Are Retrieved • Data Is Analyzed, Reformatted, And Saved Periodically (1 Minute Or Less) Example Results Of “Ping” Command Example Output From CLI-Command Pinging 192.168.3.169 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.3.169: bytes=32 time=551ms TTL=126 Reply from 192.168.3.169: bytes=32 time=638ms TTL=126 Ping statistics for 192.168.3.169: Packets: Sent = 2, Received = 2, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 551ms, Maximum = 638ms, Average = 594ms Satellite (DVB) RX Status -------------------------------- State : Locked Frequency : 12.002470 GHz Symbol Rate : 14.000000 Msps FEC Code rate : 1/2 SNR : 11 dB Viterbi Error Rate : 0 Data Collection Methodology DVB-RCS Terminal

Data Collection MethodologyWeather Sources • Overview • For Weather Underground Data, Examine Monthly Summaries For Each WX Station, Download Daily Files Of Interest (Comma-Delimited Format) • For Controlled Station (MCI), Collect Data Directly From History File • Analyze Text Data (Using C-Program) From Differing Formats (Airport, “Personal”,MCI), Flag Missing And Errored Records • Convert Each Format To CommonTime (Day Number) And CommonPrecipitation (Incremental, Rain Rate, Daily Cumulative) Representations • Load To Spreadsheet For Analysis And Comparison With Radio Data Note: For Radio Applications, “Rain Rate” Is The Primary Parameter Of Interest. However, Because Of Differing Collection Systems, Algorithms, And Data Output Formats, Rain Rates At Different Sites Are Not Necessarily Directly Comparable (But Still Useful).
