Renaissance Spreads from Italy • France • In 1494, France invaded Italy. The French Kings were fascinated by Italian architecture, art, and fashion. • In the early 1500’s, King François I arranged for Italian artists to work for him in France. He was the first person outside of Italy to collect Italian art and statues. François also built the Louvre, a palace on the banks of the Seine River in Paris. • He also brought Leonardo da Vinci to France as his “Painter, Engineer, and King’s Architect.” He encouraged French writers to copy the writing style of the Italian writers.
