  1. Wings: The Story of Daedalus and Icarus Based on Wings by Jan Yolen Page 176-182 Drawings by Dylan Minjavar, Nico Diaz, and Diego Lopez

  2. Daedalus • Sculptor and architect

  3. He invented and built… • The axe, the bevel, and the awl. • He built statues and mazes.

  4. Labyrinth • Daedalus designed mazes “whose winding passages opened one into another as if without beginning, as if without end.”

  5. Daedalus was exiled • Exiled means that you are not welcome to a place again. Daedalus was kicked out of his home town.

  6. Island of Crete

  7. King Minos • King Minos tells Daedalus to build him a labyrinth to hide his son. His son is a Minotaur. “He eats human flesh…in a maze I could keep him hidden forever.”

  8. Minotaur By Nico Diaz “His name is minotaur. He has a bull’s head but a man’s body. He eats human flesh.”

  9. “Every seven years Athens must send a tribute of boys and girls to King Minos. He puts them into the labyrinth you devised and the monster Minotaur devours them there.”

  10. “But do not forget my warning.” “I must not fly too low or the water will soak the feathers. I must not fly too high or the sun will melt the wax.”

  11. Icarus

  12. THE END

  13. Questions to Consider: • What sort of person is Daedalus? • Why does Daedalus agree to help Theseus? • How is young Icarus like his father? • Do you think the gods caused Icarus to die?
