The Role of Pennsylvania The British had no respect for our new country and for the sovereignty of American citizens President James Madison called for troops to engage the British in a war. Pa Gov. Simon Snyder requested 14,000 volunteers, he got three times that number

The war lasted three years Battles were fought across the United States & Pennsylvanians fought in all of them. 1. New Orleans 2. Baltimore 3. The Canadian border. Pennsylvania was important because of The Battle of Lake Erie
Daniel Dobbins; an important Figure At the beginning of the war, he realized the need for a naval fleet on Lake Erie. He traveled to Washington DC to urge the building of such a fleet.
Dobbins was placed in charge. Six boats were built. The boats were mounted with cannon dragged from Pittsburg. These six plus three older boats made up the fleet. Commander Oliver H Perry sailed west to meet the British fleet. Commander Perry won the battle.

In 1812 The State Capital moves west Because western and central Pennsylvania were growing in population the state decided to move the capital to a more Central location. The capital was moved to the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. Harrisburg A successful capital growing into a large suburban area In Dauphin and Cumberland counties.
