ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT IN KIGALI CITY
Challenge: • Environmental degradation • Lack of education opportunities • The Earth Charter principal: Ecological integrity section 6, 7, and 8 • target network: : young students in secondary schools and universities • We will be working in partnership with REMA (Rwanda environment management agency), ministry of environment, MINEDUC (Ministry of education), Kigali city, RDB (Rwanda development board), UNESCO, UNEP
Project plan • I would like to start an Earth Charter Youth Group (ECYG) in Rwanda, first consisting of the students of secondary schools and university. Once an ECYG is established, we can hold regular gatherings in which members can discuss and plan sustainable projects within the immediate setting (schools and universities) and also for the community at large. • Examples of projects are like workshops/seminars on the Earth Charter, sustainability, and youth leadership to create more awareness and expand group membership.
Helping the government to promote the plantation tree campaign to corporate social responsibility to support all national campaigns that can boost the country’s policies on the protection of the environment. • by planting trees in all parts of Kigali city to control erosion • Capacity development in environmental protection and preservation in Kigali city • Empowering young people to natural resource management (soil, ail, water, forests)
Empowering young people to erosion control and climate change mitigation • Engaging their practical involvement in environmental cleaning and protection • Approach liked-minded individuals who want to serve humanity • Discuss the Earth Charter and its implications
OUTCOMES • Planting not less than 5000 trees per schools • Active youth involved in tree plantation in Kigali city • Clean environment (air, soil, water) • Decrease of the rate of erosion in Kigali • Entrepreneurship spirit development
