  2. Purposes on Nonfiction • To inform • To give an opinion • To persuade • To entertain

  3. Types of Nonfiction • Biography/autobiography • Personal narrative (one incident) • Informative article • True-life adventure • Essay (may persuade, give an opinion, or simply narrate an event) • Newspaper column

  4. Strategies for Reading Nonfiction • Set a purpose for reading • Preview the reading material • Understand the organization of the work • Look for main ideas or topic sentences • Separate fact from opinion • Be aware of writer’s tone

  5. Fact vs. Opinion • Facts = statements that can be proven (Example: Ellen Goodman is the author of Primal Screen. • Opinions = statements that express a writer’s belief and cannot be proven. (Example: Ellen Goodman is the world’s best columnist.)
