Entrance Procedure • Walk in classroom silently • Pick up papers that you need from side table then walk to your seat (Keep walking forward, do not turn around) • Check board and Sit down at your desk. • Write down homework in your planner. • Take out have-outs: Study Buddy Binder and Periodic Table • Start DO First • 5 minutes to work on do first, silently and independently

  3. Objective • SWBAT determine the number of subatomic particles for a neutral atom using the periodic table. • WHY? • Allows us to determine the differences between atoms and elements. This is why materials look and act differently! • Tomorrow, we are drawing models of atoms, called Bohr Models! • Reach our growth goal and pass/earn commended on STAAR (This is all over it!)

Atomic Structure • Each element or type of atom has a different number of protons, neutrons and electrons, giving them different properties. • We can use the PERIODIC TABLE to figure out how many subatomic particles an element will have. • We know the atomic number tells us how many protons we have… • But how do we know how many electrons or neutrons are in each atom?

  6. Step 1: Look at the Periodic Table Square 1st letter capital 2nd lower case Number of protons. Tells you what kind of atom it is. Protons + neutrons (round to the nearest whole number) What can we deduce or infer from this information so we can learn more about the element?

  7. Look at the MASS NUMBER/ ATOMIC MASS • MASS number/ ATOMIC MASS = Protons + Neutrons in atom • Decimal but, always round to the nearest whole number • Why don’t we include the number of electrons? ATOMIC MASS

  8. Check Yourself! • What element has 47 protons? • What is the Atomic Mass for Sodium? (*don’t forget to round to the nearest whole number!) • What is the Atomic Mass for Chlorine? • How many protons does Silicon have? • What element has 29 electrons?

APE MAN • Note: • We can NEVER assume the number of NEUTRONSin an atom! • In a NEUTRAL or STABLE atom, the number of electrons always equals the number of PROTONS. • The atomic number ONLY tells us the # of PROTONS and the atom’sIDENTITY. • A NEUTRAL atom has a charge of ZERO.
