  1. ETReC 2007 Hans Volkert (for George Craig)DLR-Institut für Physik der Atmosphäre

  2. ETReC 2007 Strategy • Identify sensitive regions, i.e. optimal locations for supplementary observations for convective events in two European regions • COPS (guidance for targeted observation missions) • Mediterranean (preparation for future HYMEX campaign) • Dispatch targeted observations • EUCOS additional conventional observations on 6 days • Radiosonde: 6 hourly ascents at ~10 locations • AMDAR: T, p sensors on commercial aircraft giving ~4000 extra data points • DLR Falcon flights to sensitive regions • wind and water vapour Lidars, dropsonde

  3. MeteoFrance Adjoint (Alexis Doerenbecher) ECMWF Singular Vectors (Andy Lawrence) • Sensitive Regions • ECMWF - moist singular vectors (SVs) in the IFS modeling system • Météo France - Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (ETKF) based on the Arpège ensemble prediction system (PEARP) • Météo France - adjoint method using dry physics, using the Arpege modeling system • Météo France - adjoint method using moist physics, using the Arpege modeling system • University of the Balearic Islands - adjoint method using moist physics, using the MM5 modeling system • Sensitive regions: • Observation 12UTC 8.7.2007 (Sunday) • Verification 12UTC 9.7.2007 (Monday) MeteoFrance ETKF (Philippe Arbogast)

  4. Falcon Payload during COPS u,v,w,TAS T,P,q Dropsondes: u,v, P,T,q DIAL: H2O , Aerosols DWL Conical scan: u, v components Vertical pointing : w component ETReC 2007 Verification Regions COPS D-PHASE MEDEX HYMEX Targeted Observations EUCOS Additional Radiosondes AMDAR

  5. ETReC 2007 Upstream Observation Periods (UOP)

  6. Planned Work • Data denial studies to determine relative importance of different sensitive region forecasts (ECMWF) - in progress • Case study analysis to identify physical machanisms for sensitivity and observation impact (DLR) - DFG project funded • Data impact studies to assess impact of additional observations • ....
