What is your “Archetype?” • Lost parents • Man-god (baby Superman’s spaceship crash a symbolic birth of Earth and Sky) • Justice over “the law” • Clear sense of “super” vs. “normal” • Secret Identity (to protect themselves and others) • Use of “magic” (often from technology) that grants superhuman abilities • Inhabit a world similar to ours with a shared continuity • Has outfit that sets them apart, usually accentuating their strength / gender
Avoid the following pitfalls • vigilantism / Fascist idea of “might makes right” • Focus on adolescent male fantasies (trials of puberty, power from powerlessness) • Chauvinism (women are objectified and/or only “damsels in distress”) • Racist / Elitist (relatively conservative; limited range of ethnicities represented; usually man with wealthy resources [Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark] that is heroic)
