Section 2Modernization in Japan • Japan Ends Its Isolation • West wants trade with JP • At first, JP keeps them out • 1853 Commodore Perry brought 4 battle ships to JP; threatened to come back w/ more unless JP opens to trade w/ US • Treaty of Kanagawa opened 2 ports to US ships & US set up an embassy in Japan • Meiji Era • Emperor Mutsuhito modernized to counter West influence • Adopted Ger style of centralized gov’t, constitution, & military • Adopted US style of universal public education • industrialized Embassy: head quarters of an ambassador Counter: to go against
Imperial Japan • By 1890 JP was strongest military power in Asia • JP wanted to show the world they were a powerful nation • Sino-Japanese War • JP & CH traded w/ Korea; neither would send armies into Kor • Kor asked CH to send troops to put down rebellion • JP sends troops to fight CH; JP wins & gains control of Manchuria & colonies • Russo-Japanese War • JP & Rus fight over control of Manchuria/Korea • JP wins: capture or destroy Rus fleet • Pres Roosevelt brings peace between JP & Rus • Treaty of Portsmouth gives JP captured territories & keeps Rus out of Manchuria/Korea

Modernization of Japan Time Line Answers • To shock and frighten the JP into accepting trade w/ the US • Gained right to trade at 2 ports in JP • Adopted aspects of foreign cultures they admired; developed modern industries • For trade & as a military outpost to protect their own security • Rebellion broke out against Kor king who asked for CH help, JP upset at CH troops in Kor & sent troops to fight CH • Destruction of CH navy, beginning of JP colonial empire, Rus & JP as major powers/enemies in East Asia • Rus refused to stay out of Kor; JP surprised attacked Rus navy • Destruction of Rus navy, JP gains territory, Rus withdraws from Manchuria and Kor • Harshly, repressive gov’t that denied rights to Kor; inpsired Kor nationalist movement
