What grading system should be used to evaluate the group projects?
Problem-Solving in Groups 1st Define the Issue or Problem • Identify problem and specify symptoms of problem • Gather info on size and scope of the problem • Research the seriousness, urgency, implications of the problem. • Look for causes and underlying conditions of the problem
Problem-Solving in Groups 2nd Consider Goals and Constraints • Identify criteria for successful achievement of goals • Rank-order the criteria in importance • Which criteria MUST BE MET vs less important. • Refine goals, based on criteria, to be satisfactory
Group Project Criteria • Peer Evaluation (20%) • Identification of Problem (20%) • Documentation of steps to solve (20%) • How well did group meet established timetable / accomplish tasks (20%) • Presentation of Project (20%)
Problem-Solving in Groups 3rd Brainstorm Solutions • The more ideas the better-QUANTITY! • All ideas are Welcome! • No criticism–All ideas are AWESOME BABY! • Use someone else’s ideas as a springboard for additional ideas or thoughts!
Problem-Solving in Groups 4th Evaluate Possible Solutions • Assign and “A” to the best one-third of ideas • Assign a “C” to the least usable one-third • Middle one-third automatically receives a B • Go back to B’s and separate into A’s or C’s. • Prioritize A’s in terms of importance/urgency
Problem-Solving in Groups 5th reach a Consensus • Does everyone agree this is the best solution? • What concerns / issues does anyone is group have.? • Can everyone “LIVE” with this solution?
Problem-Solving in Groups 6th Plan Implementation of Solution • Develop a procedure for implementing solution with a timetable • Is it achievable? Implementable? Too expensive? Too Long? • Does Solution accomplish goals. • Implement ongoing evaluation plan that occurs at regular intervals
Problem-Solving in Groups 1st - Define the issue or problem 2nd - Consider the goals to be achieved and constraints on the goals 3rd - Generate possible solutions (Brainstorming) 4th - Evaluate possible solutions 5th - Reach a consensus on solution. 6th - Plan implementation of solution
Cautions • Do NOT vote (winners and losers) • Avoid early, quick, easy compromises / agreements • Reach the point when “ it may not be exactly what I want, but at least I can live with this decision and support it”. • Treat differences of opinion as a way of: • Gathering additional info • Clarifying issues • Forcing the group to seek better alternatives
Caution Do Not compete internally. Work for welfare of group!
