  2. Standard Precautions List of guidelines used to prevent the spread of infection By law, healthcare professionals must follow Standard Precautions Main mode of transmission is through bodily fluids

  3. Blood borne Pathogen Standard Created by OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) Healthcare facilities must provide PPEs Enforce rules of no food or drink Proper signs must be posted as needed

  4. CDC (Center for Disease Controland Prevention) Created Standard Precautions Must consider ALL bodily fluids as potentially infectious Barriers include gloves, gown, mask Required to know when to wear what

  5. Gloves Wear with most procedures Required to change after each pt. Wash hands before and after glove use

  6. Gown Wear when splashing or spray of bodily fluids may occur Wear during certain types of isolation Wear during certain types of sterile procedures (Ex. = surgery)

  7. Mask Wear when splashing or spray of bodily fluids may occur Wear during certain types of isolation Ex. – delivery of baby, dental procedures, ER, Surgery

  8. Rules of Standard Precautions Used for ALL pts. Wash hands after accidental contact with bodily fluids Wash hands before/after glove use Wear PPEs as needed Handle soiled linens away from skin/clothing Disinfect equipment according to facility policy Dispose sharp objects in needle box Treat all soiled linen as potentially infectious
