Safety symbols: 2 TYPES of Safety Symbols 1) HHPS 2) WHMIS “Hazardous Household Product Symbol” “Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System” • Found on household • products – mostly • cleaners. • Found on products • used at the workplace • – mostly cleaners.
HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS • There are 12 HHPS representing different types and • levels of hazard. PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR AND ATTIRE GOGGLES: • Goggles worn at all times. • Protects from unexpected • splatters and shatters. Ouch! CONTACTS: • No contacts – chemicals can go • underneath and stick to your eye. SHOES: • No open-toed shoes allowed in the lab.
PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR AND ATTIRE HAIR: • Long hair needs to be • tied back. • Loose clothes need to be secured and out of the way. LOOSE CLOTHES: HORSEPLAY: • No fooling around • during the lab!
PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR AND ATTIRE HANDS: • Do not put your hands in your eyes • or mouth during the lab. YUCK! FOOD & DRINK: • No eating or drinking • in the lab.
PROPER EQUIPMENT USE EDGE OF LAB BENCH: • Do not place equipment at the • edge of the lab bench. CHAIRS: • Move all chairs to the back of the room away from the benches before the lab starts. • Students must stand during a lab. WORK AREA: • Keep your work area tidy. • Move bags and books • to the wall.
PROPER EQUIPMENT USE BROKEN EQUIPMENT: • Broken equipment must be • reported to the teacher. Don’t just put it back! BROKEN GLASS: • Broken glass must be reported to • the teacher and placed in the proper • container. HOTPLATE: • Unplug the hotplate • when not in use to • prevent burns and • to let it cool down • before storing.
CHEMICAL USE CHEMICAL SPILLS: • Inform your teacher of any • chemical spills • before cleaning. HAZARDS: • Know the hazards in the • lab before starting your • experiment. SINK: • Do not pour any chemicals down the sink.
CHEMICAL USE TASTE: • Do not taste any of the chemicals. SMELL: • Smell a chemical using the • “HAND WAVING” method. AMOUNT: • Take only the amount of chemicals that you need. • Share – don’t be greedy! Greedy Smurf
CHEMICAL USE WATER FIRST: • When mixing chemicals, • always add the water first. • This prevents the chemical • from splashing. • In some cases the large volume • of water absorbs heat that may • be generated when the two • substances combine. CONTAMINATION: • Be careful not to cross-contaminate your chemicals.
INJURIES EYE WASH STATION: • If something enters your eye, have a partner • direct you to the eye wash station. • Position face above the station with eyes open for • 10 minutes. BURN OR CHEMICAL ON SKIN: • Immediately inform your teacher and place injury • under running water for 5-10 minutes. CUTS: • Immediately inform your • teacher, clean the cut and • put a bandage on it.
CLEANUP CLEAN EQUIPMENT: • All equipment needs to be properly washed, • rinsed and put in the drying rack/area. PUT AWAY EQUIPMENT: • Put back all equipment where you got it, • if you do not have to wash it. PUT AWAY GOGGLES: • Put goggles back NEATLY into the storage area.
CLEANUP LAB BENCH: • Spray then wipe down lab bench • with paper towel. PAPER TOWEL: • Do not put paper towel in the • recycling; it goes in the GARBAGE. WASH HANDS: • Wash your hands at the end of the lab.
