POD WEEK 8 PROBLEM #2 By: Nora R.
Problem: What’s the greatest amount of change you could have without being able to make change for a dollar?
Step #1 -Since the question is asking for the greatest amount I started with 3 quarters (75 cents) I did this b/c I know that it would be easier to make change out of 2 quarters and if I had 4 quarters it would already be 1 dollar.
Step #2 Next, I added as many dimes as possible without being able to make change for a dollar (4 dimes) I did this b/c when you add four dimes (40 cents) and three quarters (75 cents) you get $1.15, which if you tried to make change for a dollar with it wouldn’t work.
Step #3 -I know I couldn’t use any nickels b/c a nickel with two dimes would’ve equaled a quarter and that’s would’ve given me change for a dollar -But I noticed that I could add four pennies b/c if I added five pennies that would’ve equaled a nickel, but if I added just four pennies I still wouldn’t be able to make change for a dollar
Last Step: I added up 75¢ (3 quarters), 40¢ (4 dimes), and 4¢ (4 pennies) to get my answer.
ANSWER: The greatest amount of change you could have without being able to make change for a dollar is: $1.19 4 dimes 4 pennies 3 quarters
