Introduction OLDNEW Manual navigation GPS and ECDIS Paper charts Electronic charts Notice-to-Mariners Electronic updates Paper field sheets Add’l Military Layers Sailing Directions
ePILOTS: Introduction • The Concept: • Convert these nautical publications into a data format readable on an ECS or ECDIS. • Code the text and images using S-57. • Geo-reference the data and use a single, common symbol for “query”. Informed decision-making = improved safety of navigation.
Production Process • New product specification. • Based on S-57 objects and attributes. • Geo-reference the resulting object. • Mariner queries object: • Text pops up • Or graphic pops up
i Format: • Uses S-57 object: “MNPUB” • The associated attributes are: • “TXTDSC” which allows input of text. • “PICREP” which allows input of images. • The layer of objects is stored as a .000 file.
Requirements: • ECS or ECDIS that can display S-57 charts. • System must have multiple chart loading. • Where raster and S-57 can be loaded together, ePILOTS will load on top of raster. • System must have “query” tool. • Scale is set so ePILOTS load first.
Flexibility • Embedded information. • Quick to query. • Easy to appreciate and comprehend. • Can be viewed before or during passage.
Options • View information one line at a time or view the whole chapter. • Select one point to query or a geographical region. • All aerial photos, tables, images, diagrams are to view.
Future Considerations • Areas of production • Currently: Lake Erie, Juan de Fuca Strait. • Standards & formats • IHO Standardization of Nautical Publications Working Group (SNPWG) • US, Canada, S. America, Europe • ECS/ECDIS manufacturers
Maintenance & Distribution • Database format • Produce from one source? • Print copies • PDFs • ePILOTS • Web-based and CD ROM • Low-cost purchase and updating subscriptions • Work with HOs to meet their needs
