Daily SciencePg. 44 What element is in period4, group 6? What group is Germanium in? Which period? Write the electron configuration for Manganese. Write the short hand electron configuration for Tungsten. Draw the orbital diagram for sulfur Based on its position on the periodic table, what energy level, orbital, and valence will the element Arsenic end with? Which element has an electron configuration that ends with 3p4 ? Name a metal, nonmetal, and semiconductor. Which groups represent the main group elements?
Periodic Trends Pg. 45
Periodic Trends Because of periodicity, we can observe trends of the elements on the periodic table. Atomic radius- relates to the size of an atom (how closely the nucleuslies to the next atom) Ionic radius- the size of an atom after it has gained or lost an electron (wants 8 electrons) Ionization energy- energy required to remove an electron (high IE = strong hold on e- ) Electronegativity- the ability to attract electrons
Your turn • You and your groups will be given values for certain periodic trends. • You will use those values to cut straws to represent the value • We will just be looking at groups 1-2 and 13-18 • First, figure out how we need to cut the straws? • What do we need to account for? • What relationship can we set up to figure out how long to cut each straw? • How are you going to organize your well plate?
