Short-hand notation Start with the noble gas before the element and put it in brackets. This represents the electron configuration up to that point (ex. [Ne]) Write the rest of the electron configuration afterward. Ex. Na- [Ne] 3s1
Exceptions There are some elements such as chromium and copper whose electron configurations are out of order. They are more stable if you fill or half-fill their last orbital Write electron configurations for chromium and copper

Valence Electrons Determine chemical properties of an element Electrons in the outer most energy level To find valence electrons, add all numbers in the highest energy level. All atoms want filled valence shells (usually 8 electrons) Write electron configurations for Li and Na. Be and Mg. B and Al. C and Si. N and P. O and S. F and Cl. Ne and Ar.
