BEE-BOT STEM ROBOTICSOBJECTIVEPrepare and Network 3:30 – 3:40 • Open software downloaded from server or from www.terrapinlogo.com • Introduce yourself • Designate who will take notes for feedback • Play with a robot
BEE-BOT STEM ROBOTICS OBJECTIVE Use software, robots and mats to learn the physical characteristics of the Bee-Bot and discover the rectangular / directional language of programming. • 3:30 Introduction • 3:45 Software Tools, Arithmetic and Shape Activities • 4:00 Bee-Bot Mats • 4:20 Feedback Email, Restroom Break, Snacks • 4:30 Video on Computer Science • 4:35 Software games and I-Pad App • 4:55 Simon Robot Says • 5:05 Action Plans and Closure

Computational Thinking and TEKS • Learn to think about and design solutions to problems. • Sequencing and directions • Numbers and operations • Measurement • Algebraic reasoning • Patterns & spatial reasoning • Develop an understanding of programming, prediction and self-evaluation • Story Telling and Exploration Resource posters and videos: https://cscurriculum.shutterfly.com/
Overview of the Software • Menu Bar • Activity Ideas • Command area • Same as Bee-Bot • Program Code • Command Cards • Game side bar
Systems Model for the Number Line Counting Game • INPUT • Forward Directional Command • Go Control Command PROCESS Count Bee-Bots on the flash card Click forward command to match number of Bee-Bots on Flash Card Click Go command Goal: Program the E-Bot to move to the number that matches the correct number of Bee-Bots on the flash card. • FEEDBACK • Did the E-Bot stop on the number that matches the correct number of Bee-Bots on the flash card? • If Yes, click the next flash card. • If No, count how many forward commands are on the code then delete or add needed forward commands. OUTPUT Code with forward commands The E-Bot stops on a number Teacher notes: Algebraic Thinking – number sense Observe if student is using a finger to count. Note students who can “see” sets of Bee-Bots without using finger. This shows fluency relationships of sets of objects. I found older students who used their fingers were the same students who all TAKS tests.
ObjectiveUse FORWARD and BACKWARD directional commandsUse PAUSE (think), CLEAR (start), GO (end) control commands 3:45 – 3:55 • Open Bee-Bot software • Scroll to last E-mat with numbers • Click on arithmetic activity tab and do the counting, addition and substraction number-line lessons using the E-bot. • Observe the problem-solving process using the systems model. NOTE: Let your students figure out how to subtract by themselves!
ObjectiveUse FORWARD, BACKWARD, LEFT, RIGHT directional commandsUse PAUSE (think), CLEAR (start), GO (end) control commands 3:55 – 4:00 • Open the Shapes E-mat • Do each of the shape lessons using the E-bot • Can you create a systems model creating your own game?
ObjectiveLearn to use the Bee-Bots and Mats.Brainstorm how they can be used in your classroom.Create a list of ideas. 4:00 – 4:20 • Use Alphabet Mat • See Pocket Mat • Sets of Command Cards PLEASE: Email the list of ideas and any other comments or feedback collected. Then take a break and get a snack.

ObjectiveMaster the software and play with the Bee-Bot app. 4:35 – 4:55 • Use color and speed attributes • Play 3-letter spelling game • Experiment with software. • Play I-Pad Garden app
ObjectiveExperience the Physical Robotic Simulation 4:55 – 5:05 • Simon Robot Says Future Ideas • Robotic Spelling Bee cscurriculum.shutterfly.com/48 • Line Dancing cscurriculum.shutterfly.com/35 • Google “Bee-Bot” – all ES in UK have Bee-Bots
ObjectiveDiscuss and email action plans. 5:05 – 5:25 • What did you learn? • How do you see using this? • How will you share with other teachers at your school? • What support do you need to make Bee-Bots a go to item in your class/school? • Do you want follow-up PD? • Binary Days 10/10, 11/1, 11/11, 1/10, 1/11 • Computer Science Education Week 12/9-13
