  3. Drama vs. Narrative • What are some differences between drama and narrative? • Drama: a work that is performed live on stage • An individual drama is called a play

  4. Play structure • Cast of characters: lists all the players (characters) • Plot: the action of the play • Scene: a brief portion of that action • Act: A group of scenes

  5. Reading a play • Script: The play in written form • As you read a script, first look at the cast of characters, dialogue, and stage directions. This will help you to picture the action and involve yourself in it. • Dialogue: words spoken by the actors

  6. Reading a play • Stage directions: directions to the crew and actors • Dictate the actor’s tone of voice, movements, and other actions • Appear in brackets beside dialogue • Different stage directions create entirely different feelings for the audience

  7. Staging: bringing the drama to life • Set: physical environment onstage • Suggests the time and place of the action • Costumes: clothing worn by the actors to make the action appear realistic
