For Parents and Teachers West PointUXO Safety Program In this presentation, I will explain what UXO is, why it is dangerous, and impresses upon you the 3 Rs of what to do if you or someone else comes across UXO.
It is important that you are aware of the danger involved with UXO and know what actions you need to take so it doesnt cause any harm to you, your family, or your friends.

2. What is UXO? UXO stands for UneXploded Ordnance.
Ordnance is what we call ammunition, such as:
Bullets, bombs, duds, grenades, blasting caps, shells and fuses
Unexploded ordnance is:
Ammunition that was fired but didnt explode
Ammunition that could explode
New or old...Shiny or rustyclean or dirty
All of it is dangerous!
3. Some UXO are hard to identify UXO comes in many shapes, sizes, and types.
Flares, simulators, and blasting caps look harmless, but they are all dangerous.
Dont be fooled by the word simulator.
Size and age dont matter.
Small items can injure or kill.
Old war souvenirs can be dangerous
8. Keep yourself and your children safe! Teach your children what to do if they encounter UXO:
Recognize it.
Retreat
Report it.
9. Recognize It UXO may not look like a bullet or bomb.
UXO may look harmless, but they are all dangerous!
UXO may be shiny or rusty.
UXO may be clean or dirty.
Even though UXO hasnt been moved for years, or youve moved it dozens of times, it may still explode.
Leave it alone! If it looks like a bullet or bomb, it is - leave it alone.
The scary part is that it may not look like a bullet or a bomb. It may be shiny or rusty. It could be any size. It may only be a part of an item. It doesnt matter - if it comes from a military base, you must treat it like it is very dangerous. Leave it alone. Even tiny explosives devices can be deadly, especially in a small childs hands.

10. Retreat Leave the area the same way you entered the area.
Dont touch UXO.
Stay away.
11. Report It Report UXO to West Point Military Police at (845) 938-3333.
Trained explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel will dispose of the item.
If someone is injured by UXO, call 911 immediately!
12. Be Safe! Remember UXO can kill.
Leave it alone.
Get away from it.
Report it to Military Police immediately (845) 938-3333.
Keep your children and yourself safe.
