Feudal Obligations • Obligation: a responsibility or duty, a commitment • Feudalism: Provided protection at a local level and served as the political and social structure. • Political: only nobles (lords and vassals) • Social: based on heredity, no movement in social class allowed
Manor System Obligations • The manor system was the basic economicstructure • It rested on a set of rights and obligations between the lord and his serfs or peasants • Peasant (freemen):a person who works the land in return for protection • Serf:a peasant of the lowest class, who is bound to the land and cannot leave it
