  2. BIRTH • Sept. 13, 1857, Milton Hershey was born. • Only surviving child. • Born and raised on farm. • Full name Milton Snavely Hershey

  3. CHILDHOOD • As kid he trailed his father • Father lacked work ethic • Milton cuts himself out of family • Milton had good work ethic unlike his father

  4. CHILDHOOD • Dropped out of school at age 14 • Expressed interest in candy • Began apprenticing in candy making at lancaster • When he was 18 he borrowed $150 to start a business.

  5. ADULTHOOD Moved to Philadelphia Started business Business failed Moved back home and started caramel company

  6. ADULTHOOD • Business succeeded • Shipped caramel all over world • Started to focus on milk chocolate • Sold caramel company for $1 million

  7. ACHIEVEMENTS • Created Hershey PA • Founded Hershey company • First american to create milk chocolate • Started Hershey press

  8. Achievements • Created school for underprivileged children • Built the Hershey Hotel • Built the Hershey Sports Arena • provided homes for employees

  9. ACHIEVEMENTS • Bought land in Cuba • No workers laid off during depression • Built Hershey Park • Built library and sports arena • Also built community center

  10. MILTON HERSHEY'S DEATH • After his wife died he kept working • He worked into his late eighties • He died on October 13,1945 • All of hershey's structures still remain today
