  2. Childhood • Born September 13th, 1857 • Born near Hockersville, Pennsylvania • He was the only surviving child of Veronica Snavely and Henry Hershey. • He was born on a farm outside of Derry Church in Pennsylvania.

  3. Childhood • He dropped out of school at the age of 13. • Parents eventually separated. The details about it are cloudy. • Became interested in candy-making at the age of 14

  4. Childhood • Began apprenticing with a confectioner at age 14 or 15. • He eventually set up his own candy shop in the heart of Philadelphia.

  5. Adulthood • Found work in Denver as a confectioner • Eventually closed up shop, headed west, and reunited with his father

  6. Adulthood • 1898- Married his wife, Catherine • Milton and Catherine were unable to have children of their own. • They focused a good portion of their giving on endeavors that affected kids.

  7. Adulthood • 1909- Opened the Hershey Industrial School (It was a facility for orphaned boys) • Wealth expanded from company growth • He was very generous

  8. Adulthood • 1915- Wife (Catherine) died • Transferred much of his wealth to the Hershey Trust- funds the Hershey School- after his wife died

  9. Adulthood • 1935- Established the M.S Hershey Foundation • M.S Hershey Foundation funds educational and cultural activities for the Hershey residents. • 1905- Opened a modern candy-making facility in Derry Church, his birthplace.

  10. Adulthood • Worked well into his eighties. • Died on October 13th, 1945 • He died in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
