Social Deviance: An Introduction Take notes, please!
What is “deviance”? • Deviant behavior is any behavior that departs from societal or group norms • There can be a wide range of deviant behavior
Range of Deviant Behavior • At one end of the spectrum we have criminal behavior • Why would criminal behavior most definitely be classified as “deviance”? • Other end of the spectrum: wearing heavy make-up (forbidden by some parents and religious groups) • Deviant behavior is not always easy to recognize!

Make a list of deviant behaviors: • Think of all types of behaviors that may fall on either end of the spectrum (and in between) • Be exhaustive in your list-making! (at least 8-10 deviant behaviors) • Be prepared to defend why they fall on one given end of the spectrum or the other • Think about behaviors that may “depart” from social norms but for reasons other than obvious reasons
Types of Deviance • “Negative” deviance includes behavior that under-conforms to accepted norms • “Positive” deviance includes behavior that over-conforms to social expectations • Extremes of perfectionism
Think About: Could you be a deviant (without even realizing it)? Do any of your social behaviors departed from widely accepted norms? Why about norms specific to the Yorktown community?
Think about for our upcoming classes: How might a society discourage deviance? What might this form of dissuasion be called? What happens when children (or minors) engage in extreme deviant behavior?
Social sanctions = rewards or punishments that encourage conformity to social norms
