  1. Table of contents: Contraceptive / contraception Types of contraceptives Failure rates Pg. 556 in health book Contraceptives

  2. A contraceptive is a birth control device. There are two categories of contraceptives: Barrier and Hormonal contraceptives. No device is a 100% effective in preventing pregnancy - the only 100% effective way to prevent pregnancy is through abstinence. Contraception is the use of a contraceptive. Contraceptives

  3. Not to get pregnant when sexually active is the main reason. Some people think they help reduce the risk of contracting an STD. However, they are wrong. There is only one contraceptive that helps reduce the risk of getting an STD and that is the condom. Give me some reasons why a person would use a contraceptive device?

  4. Why do some people want to wait a couple of years after they are married before they have children? People that are married and want to wait to have children may choose to use a contraceptive device to help reduce the risk of pregnancy. When you get married do you want to have kids right away?

  5. Barrier Contraceptive: They act as a barrier to prevent sperm cells from fertilizing an ova. Some barrier contraceptives can be bought in grocery or drugstores. Barrier vs. hormonal

  6. Hormonal contraceptive: are drugs that prevent the release of the egg from the ovary or keep the egg from being fertilized or implanted. These drugs are swallowed, injected, implanted under the skin, or absorbed through the skin or mucus membrane. Barrier vs. hormonal

  7. Some teens think that withdrawal or douching after sex prevents pregnancy. That is not true. Withdrawal is when the man removes his penis from the woman’s vagina before ejaculation. This does not work because some semen is released before ejaculation. Contraceptives

  8. Douching is washing the vagina with fluid. Many females think if they do this after sexual intercourse it will wash away the sperm. Douching can actually increase the chance of pregnancy because the fluid used to wash the vagina pushes the sperm further into the uterus. Contraceptives

  9. Contraceptive failure rates measure how often a contraceptive works or fails. Perfect use failure rates are estimates of contraceptive failure when the contraceptive is used perfectly in a controlled environment. Failure Rates

  10. Typical use failure rates are the actual rates of contraceptive failure when used in the real –world environment. If a contraceptive has a failure rate of 20%, what does that mean? Failure Rates

  11. Failure rates increase with teens because contraceptives are used inconsistently or incorrectly often times by teens. Contraceptives need to be used correctly and consistently for them to have the best results. Failure rates increase with teens, why do you think that is?
