Characteristic Properties • An attribute that can be used to help identify a substance. A characteristic property is not affected by the amount of a substance.
Pure Substances • A substance that is either an element or a compound.
Element • A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.
Compound • A pure substance consisting of two or more elements combined. • For example sodium chloride consists of the elements sodium and chlorine.
Mixtures • Two or more elements or compounds that are mixed together but not chemically combined.
Heterogeneous Mixture • A mixture in which the components are not evenly mixed so that different parts of the mixture have different compositions.
Homogeneous Mixture • A mixture in which the components are evenly mixed so that every part of the mixture is the same as any other.
Composite • A material made from two or more substances. • For example: resin and glass fibers in fiberglass.
