Foundation of Librarianship Course Code: 5500 Librarianship as Profession in Pakistan
Profession • A paid occupation, esp. one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification. • Profession is an occupation carried on by professional people like doctors, lawyers, architects, etc. it involves application of expert knowledge to solve specific problems or to handle specific tasks.
Celebration to Reality • Manpower Needs • Educators • Curriculum • Undergraduate & Paraprofessional Training • Teaching Institutions • Student Admissions • Professional Literature • Professional Organizations
Manpower Needs • Our manpower needs have never been realistically analyzed. Uptill early 70’s the market was stable and predictable. Manpower supply was somewhat controlled. Admissions were limited to match the demand. There was virtually no unemployment.
Educators • In terms of total faculty strength, the situation appears to be quite encouraging. But the level of capability of the faculty members presents a somewhat dismal picture. Indeed it is an area of serious concern. The faculty members do not have the requisite academic and professional credentials. (Prof. Dr. KanwalAmeen)
Curriculum • Curricula taught in our universities has been criticized as being outdated, irrelevant, imbalanced with regards to theory and practice and lacking some fundamental course. Slow process of change has mainly been due to the inability of the present faculty to cope with subject matter. • The latest revision at the university of the Punjab is encouraging.
Undergraduate & Paraprofessional Training • Training courses conducted by various associations or individuals have never been relevant or upto the standard. AnisKhurshid express the fact that these courses have received the stamp of approval of the Department of Libraries, Government of Pakistan. • Interference in the professional affairs when a national professional association exists and several universities provide library education it seems to be an undue.
Teaching Institutions • The establishment of the recently founded library schools in the country has been without meeting the minimum standards. It is hard to justify the existence of some of these programmes. (AnisKhurshid). • Professional leaders, both teachers and working librarians, should sit together and work out minimum standards for the universities to follow.
Student Admissions • Quality of students entering the university has been adversely affected by varying standards of undergraduate education, unfair means used in the public examinations and political interference in admissions. • Standardized tests similar to GRE should be developed on the national level.
Professional Literature • The amount of literature produced by the Pakistani librarians is quite reasonable when compared with countries of similar size and background. • If a reasonable amount of locally produced quality literature is not available, the professional growth will remain retarded.
Pakistan Library Association (PLA) PLA was established in March 1957 in Karachi with following aims and objectives as mentioned in its constitution. • To provide the status and professional standing of library workers and for safeguarding their interests. • To promote the study and research in library science and dissemination of information about current trends, theories and practices in the field of library science. • To establish a comprehensive library services in Pakistan. • The association shall act as liaison between other organizations of similar aim and objectives.
