Permanent Magnets Experiment Part I Determine the North and South seeking pole of two bar magnets. A. Determine the north pole of each of your magnets by: 1. Find the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field at your lab table by using your compass to find the North direction. Place a piece of tape on your table with an arrow drawn on it pointing north. 2. Make a wire holder for the magnet as shown. Suspend one of your bar magnets by a string and let it come to rest. Label the end that points to the north, N. Repeat for the other magnet. Do NOT assume that any markings or colors on your bar magnets are correct or have any significance.

Place the bar magnet beneath a piece of white paper. b. Trace the outline of the magnet and label the poles, N and S. c. Sprinkle some iron filings on the paper and gently tap the paper. Make a sketch of the pattern. 2. Repeat this procedure for two bar magnets laid end to end, with a north and a south pole facing each other. 3. Repeat this procedure for two bar magnets laid end to end, with a north and a north pole facing each other. 4. Repeat this procedure for two bar magnets laid end to end, with a south and a south pole facing each other. Label and Save these Four Drawings.
Permanent Magnets Experiment Part IV. Mapping the Magnetic Field Using a Compass. a. Place the bar magnet beneath a piece of white paper. b. Trace the outline of the magnet and label the poles, N and S. c. Place the compass at a given location. Note the direction of the compass and draw a small arrow at that location and direction on your paper. d. Move to a new nearby location and repeat. e. Continue this process until you have mapped the area all around the magnet. Label and Save this drawing.
