2-3 Subtracting Integers

2-3 Subtracting Integers. How are addition and subtraction of integers related?. Subtract Integers. When you subtract 6 – 8, as shown in our GSP demo, the result is the same as adding 6 + (-8). When you subtract -3 – 5, as shown in our GSP demo, the result is the same as adding -3 + (-5).

  1. 2-3 Subtracting Integers How are addition and subtraction of integers related?

  2. Subtract Integers • When you subtract 6 – 8, as shown in our GSP demo, the result is the same as adding 6 + (-8). • When you subtract -3 – 5, as shown in our GSP demo, the result is the same as adding -3 + (-5).

  3. Additive Inverses 6 + (-8) = -2 -3 + (-5) = -8 6 - 8 = -2 -3 – 5 = -8 Same Result! Additive Inverses Same Result!

  4. KEY CONCEPT • To subtract an integer, add its additive inverse.

  5. Please find each difference. 8 – 13 -5 -4 – 10 -14 -13 – 9 -22 20 – (-15) 35 7 – (-3) 10 -2 – (-4) 2 -1 – (-10) 9 -16 – (-3) -13

  6. Subtract Integers to Solve a Problem The table to the right shows the record high and low temperatures recorded in selected states through 1999. What is the range, or difference between the highest and lowest temperatures, for Virginia?

  7. Evaluate Algebraic Expressions • Evaluate x – 6 if x = 12 • Evaluate s – t if s = -9 and t = -3 • Evaluate a – b + c if a = 15, b = 5, and c = -8
