Definition • WebCT or blackboard is a Web based set of Course Tools designed to deliver online learning. • WebCT is the world's first widely successful course management system for higher education.
The history of WebCT or Blackboard WebCT was originally developed at the University of British Columbia by a faculty member in computer science, Murray Goldberg. In 1995, Goldberg began looking at the application of web-based systems to education. His research showed that student satisfaction and academic performance could be improved through the use of a web-based educational resource, or web-based course tools (from which the name WebCT is derived). To continue his research, he decided to build a system to ease the creation of web-based learning environments. This led to the first version of WebCT in early 1996
Some of the WebCT or blackboard tools used to support online learning include : • homepages • discussions • e-mail • chat • glossary • calendar • quiz
Advantages • Improve the students academic performance. • A student can study independently online. • Make university-level technology education programs begin to offer more online classes and degree programs. • useful tool for students who are comfortable with the technology and do not encounter serious technical problems.
Disadvantage • Problem using or rather difficult to use for lazy students.
