Action/Adventure Genre Codes and Conventions
summary An action adventure film is essentially one long quest with a succession of different chase sequences, each one more death defying and seemingly impossible than the one before. The trick for the producers is to ramp up the tension as the film progresses to a storming end sequence. Will our explorers make it, or will the evil antagonist get there first? Typically this type of genre takes the certificate of either 12 or 15 to optimise it’s audience and can often be hybridised with other genres such as sci-fi, romance etc.
Characters & locations • The characters in action adventure films tend to be believable despite the film itself being unrealistic. • Time periods are stereotypically in the not too distant past or fictional storybook worlds. • The main protagonist who tends to be a ‘normal’ guy who discovers a hidden power or talent. • The hero is always helped by a team of innocent characters who get caught up with the action. • Humorous dialogue is often used to diffuse situations. • Mortal danger arises as a twist in the plot and the characters take it seriously. • Exotic locations, mind boggling chases and hair raising adventures keep the audience on their seats.
