Cutting through the Cacophony “It seems rather incongruous that in a society of super-sophisticated communication, we often suffer from a shortage of listeners.” (Erma Bombeck)
HCFLA NewsLINE NewsLINE began in Hamilton Centre initially as a campaign tool designed to support & promote our candidate and the Liberal Party’s election campaign platform.
NewsLINE content • Focus on local events & activities • Encourage members’ participation – at events and by providing copy & photos • Content: community events, ED news & notices, LPC material, news from external sources, other ridings’ activities
10 steps to newsletter production • Draft a newsletter production plan • The plan should include identification of key target audiences: internal = ED members & supporters; external = community organizations, cultural & religious groups, civic leaders, unions, media, other EDs, LPCO, LPC, business leaders & organizations & other stakeholders
Targeting your audiences Shotgun or sniper rifle?
Targeting your audiences • Shotgun = blast general information to all targets • Sniper rifle = fire specific, issue-specific messages to specially-targeted audiences
10 steps to newsletter production (continued) 4. Solicit content suggestions & ideas and encourage active participation by members 5. Identify primary issues shaping & affecting the ED 6. Recruit writers, photographers, graphic designers and social media specialists
10 steps to newsletter production (continued) 8. Refine plan & content based on members’ input 9. Establish firm timeline for implementation 10. Launch newsletter
Newsletter guidelines • Quality matters: use Canadian Press Style Guide and Caps & Spelling (available in hard copy or on-line) • Establish editorial & proofreading protocol – “the dreaded approval process” – ensure ALL outgoing material is vetted by your president and your candidate (or designates) – remember: you cannot be your own editor
