  1. Warm-Up: February 18, 2014 Write each of the following in terms of sine and cosine: tan x = csc x = sec x = cot x =

  2. Chapter 5 – Analytic Trigonometry You need to know most Chapter 4 material to succeed in Chapter 5 You still need to know the unit circle and trig values table We will be verifying identities – similar to proofs in geometry We will be using identities to evaluate expressions We will be solving trigonometric equations 5 sections

  3. Verifying Trigonometric Identities Section 5.1

  4. Verifying an Identity An identity is an equation that is true for all values of the variable within the domain. Verifying an identity is simplifying one side of an equation to show that it is equal to the other side. Only one side may be manipulated Use trig identities Often more than one correct method

  5. Fundamental Trigonometric Identities Reciprocal Identities Quotient Identities Pythagorean Identities

  6. Procedures Do not skip steps! Work on only one side of the given equation. Work down your paper using a two-column format If your work cannot easily be followed, it will not be marked correct. You are not done until the side you are working on reads exactly the same as the other side

  7. Strategies Work on the more complicated side Put everything in terms of sine and cosine Factor Combine fractions Multiply numerator and denominator by same factor

  8. Example 1 – Verify the Identity

  9. Example 2 – Verify the Identity

  10. Assignment Page 553 #1-19 Odd Will be collected and checked for accuracy (not just completion)

  11. First Five Problems

  12. Warm-Up: February 19, 2014 For what quadrants are each of the following functions defined?

  13. Homework Questions?

  14. Example 3 – Verify the Identity

  15. Example 4 – Verify the Identity

  16. Example 5 – Verify the Identity

  17. Assignment Page 553 #21-57 Every Other Odd Will be collected and checked for accuracy (not just completion)
