  2. What is a Project? • A project is an inter-related set of activities whose combined performance within a limited period of time accomplishes certain desired objectives.

  3. What is a Project? • A project has a unique purpose • A project is temporary • A project requires resources, often from various areas • A project should have a primary sponsor or customer • A project involves uncertainty

  4. Typical Characteristics of Projects • Limited (often highly constrained) duration • Uncertainty regarding work required, methods, durations, and costs • Complex sequencing requirements among activities • Large projects are often composed of multiple smaller projects • Often constrained resources availability and uneven workload

Typical Characteristics of Projects • Temporary project organization/team with members drawn from various disciplines, functional areas, and organizations • Project manager lacks formal, permanent authority with respect to team members • Potential for changing priorities, miscommunication, confusion, and conflict.

  6. The Triple Constraint • Scope • What is the project trying to accomplish? What unique product or service does the customer or sponsor expect from the project? • Time • How long should it take to complete the project? What is the project’s schedule? • Cost • What should it cost to complete the project?

  7. What is Project Management? • Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities in order to meet or exceed stakeholder needs and expectations from a project.
