Build Your Own Thoreau Cabin • Using the graph paper, pencils, and ruler, build your own Thoreau-inspired cabin where you can explore your own individuality and spirituality. • Three rules: • It should be the same dimensions as Thoreau’s cabin, 15’ x 10’ (2 boxes = 1 foot). • No electricity, gasoline, propane, hamster wheels, etc. • No human housemates. • Consider the following: • What do you need to survive in the woods for 2 years alone? • What do you need to entertain yourself in the woods for 2 years alone? • What does the surrounding landscape look like?
Writing Assignment: • After creating your cabin, look at what you have created and write a creative diary entry about a day you experience living in this cabin and wandering these woods. Consider what you have already learned about transcendentalism, Thoreau’s reflections from what you have highlighted, and your own personal beliefs about spirituality and nature.
