What Are They • Anabolic- androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the sex hormone Testosterone. • Originally developed to help patients where the body did not produce enough testosterone on its own. • Have since been used in almost any athletic event or sport
Brief History • First the hormone Anrostenone was extracted from a few liters of urine by a German Chemist named Adolf Butenandt in 1931 • Shortly after, another chemist, Leopold Ruzicka, synthesized the hormone testosterone • In 1935 both chemists’ worked together to create the first Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid
How They Work • Steroids work by mimicking the bodies natural reaction to the hormone testosterone. • They increase protein synthesis which is what is responsible for the increase in lean muscle, and decrease in fat tissue so desired by the athletes who use them.

By the Numbers… • It is approximated that in a survey of 500,000 students, 1 in 30 uses, or has used steroids. • In Louisiana, more than 11% of students reported using steroids in a 2001 survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. • Student testing is low, and infrequent due to cost.
