The Geant4 project, led by J. Apostolakis, focuses on various areas of work including coordination, release preparation, physics validation, and model improvement. The team also addresses challenges such as energy response, neutron interactions, and diversity of expertise to enhance physics modeling. Maintaining collaboration with laboratories and universities is essential for moving forward in physics involvement. Optimization of models through validation and concentration is crucial for progress in the field.

Areas of Work of SFT in Geant4 • Coordination, release preparation (staff) • G4 Spokesperson/SB Chair, Release manager/QA • Physics Validation (mix of staff/associates/fellow) • Thin-target benchmark data • Physics Model improvement (mainly by associates) • Hadronic: String models, cascade, CHIPS • EM Physics: Standard (HEP) • Geometry (mix) • Navigation; solids; tracking in field; persistency. In the above areas support and maintenance are included - and are an increasing fraction – as well as validation, testing and development. • Testing: nightly integration tests, regression & release validation • Hosting web site and development tools • Contribute also to other areas, e.g. • Performance improvement – collaborating with FNAL experts, LHC teams • Training courses; multithreading prototype studies, ..
“Basically done” for hadronics? • Recent improvements • Good hadronic shower shape • Energy response in transition region (between models) • But a significant number of other issues • Treatment of neutron (lateral shower shape) • Interactions of hyperons (use outdated LHEP modeling) • Resolution • Missing energy
Challenges • Diversity of Expertise • High-energy nuclear interactions • Diffraction • Cascade • Neutron interactions (low energy) • Effort for support • Identify issue(s) responsible for deviations • Review results for simple setups • Check alternative • Model validation and improvement • Validation can include many contributors • Improve models needs more ‘concentration’
How to move forward • Maintain collaboration • Laboratories (Europe/US/+) • Universities • CERN/SFT Involvement • Associates – duration limitations • Need to re-grow Physics Involvement in SFT • Need combination • Expertise in physics modeling (senior) • Young contributors - validation (+ tuning?) • Long-term contributors (staff)
