Geant4 hadronics group meeting May 4th 2007 INFN-LNS group and its Geant4 related activities Francesco Romanoin behalf of Geant4 hadronic group at LNS-INFN, Cataniaromanof@lns.infn.it
Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group at LNS-INFN (Catania) Participants:Giacomo Cuttone: Research Chief at Laboratori Nazionali del SudG. A. P. Cirrone: Researcher at Laboratori Nazionali del SudFrancesco Romano: PhD Student at University of Catania • Research activities of the group: • Dosimetry for proton and ion beams • Proton-therapy treatment of ocular melanomas • Detector characterisation for dosimetry applications in proton, electron and photon beams • Proton Computed tomography (pCT): experimental and Monte Carlo studies • Monte Carlo simulation for radiotherapy applications (photons, protons and ions) • Measurements of nuclear fragments production for carbon ions (in progress!)
Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group at LNS-INFN (Catania) • Geant4 activities in the past years: • LowEnergy and advanced example Group: Hadrontherapyadvanced example (validation studies) • Proton Computed Tomography device with 250 MeV proton beams (monte carlo simulation) • Monte Carlo simulation of a Gamma Kniferadiotherapy device and comparison vs experimental data • Monte Carlo simulation of dose deposited in water by a 62 AMeV carbon ion beam and comparison vs experimental data

Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group at LNS-INFN (Catania) Our interest in Geant4 hadronic physics: hadrontherapy and its involvments from a physical point of view (carbon ion therapy) Study of dose distribution in tissue-like materials by carbon ion beams also for a possible Treatment Planning System (TPS) for carbon ion therapy • Dose released to the patient uncertainties: • the fragments production on different angles and depths • the radiobiological efficiency (RBE) of ions in biological matters all physics reactions at the base of hadronic processes !!! Current research activity: Actually our research group is moving in these three directions: Monte Carlo Simulations Experimental data Detailed study of physics models
Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group at LNS-INFN (Catania) • Monte Carlo simulations • Short term simulation activity: an apparatus composed by 88 ΔE-E detectors (present at LNS Catania) and comparison with angular and energetic distributions. • Long term simulation activity: simulation using different Geant4 hadronic models Detailed study of physics models Detailed study of physics models Study and comparison of different physics model developed in Geant4 (Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group). Under the guide of Aatos Heikkinen we probabily will focus our attention in the study and a possible development of: isotope_production class and/or pre_equilibrium class semplified and validated physics list in order to reduce ambiguity in physics models
Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group at LNS-INFN (Catania) Experimental data a) short period work b) long period work a) short-period work: Measurements of the fragmentation processes of 40/400 AMeV carbon ions beams on different targets distribution of produced fragments. Experimental setup: two different groups of ΔE-E detectors (silicon and caesium, in total 88 single detectors). Up to now we performed two experimental runs with 62 and 35 AMeV carbon beams on graphiteand gold targets (data analysis is still in progress). Actullay used at LNS-INFN Catania and up to 80 AMeV beams more compact and portable detector needs! energy range up to 400 AMeV (long period work)
Geant4 Hadronic Physics Working Group at LNS-INFN (Catania) Experimental data b) long period work: The system will essentially be composed by two separate parts: a three stage telescope (two transmission silicon detectors with a PSD and one CsI(Tl) calorimeter) a thin plastic scintillator detector Two different configurations: 1) detector + target (fragments production and carbon beam attenuation measurements vs target thickness) 2) quality control device (carbon beam characterization without target) commercial involvments
