  2. Learning goal • LG: Identify and plot points in the first quadrant of a Cartesian plane, using whole number ordered pairs. • Kid friendly: Write and place points on an ordered grid called a Cartesian plane • Definition: Cartesian coordinates can be used to pinpoint where you are on a map or graph • What I think I already know:

  3. Cartesian Coordinates • Using Cartesian Coordinates you mark a point on a graph by how far along and how far up it is: The point (12,5) is 12 units along, and 5 units up.

  4. X and y axis The left-right (horizontal) direction is called X. The up-down (vertical) direction is called Y. Put them together on a graph and you are ready to go Where they cross over is the "0" point,
you measure everything from there. The X Axis runs horizontally through zero The Y Axis runs vertically through zero

  5. example Note: When listing coordinates, x always comes first, followed by a comma and then y Point (6,4) is 6 units across (in the x direction), and 4 units up (in the y direction) So (6,4) means: Go along 6 and then go up 4 then "plot the dot". 6. practice • Game of battleship! • Instructions (2 Players Required): • Both players place their boats on the defensive grid according to the chart above. The first player calls out a position, for example (5, 2). The other player says either “Hit” or “miss” depending upon one of his/her ships is in the position called out. The person calling out should mark a hit or miss on their “offensive grid” to keep track of the shots. The other player should mark the shot on the “defensive grid”. If the shot is a “hit”, the player goes again – otherwise the other player takes a turn. Once the opposing player has scored a hit on all parts of a particular ship, you must call out “Hit! You sunk my Cruiser” (or whatever type of ship it was). Once a player has sunk all the opposite ships, they are the winner.
