  2. Advanced Cities • More people and more diverse populace • Greater variety of work • Social classes • Better protection • More forms of entertainment • Public spaces and buildings • Surplus food, easier lifestyle, trade, luxury items

  3. Specialized Workers • Surplus people can do something other than farming • Focus on one type of work Quality of work improves • New occupations • Weavers • Potters • Armorers • Priests • Kings/leaders • Soldiers • Builders • Scribes • Farmers • Etc.

  4. Complex Institutions • Definition of institution: an organized group of people who have a specific purpose, often to help society meet its needs. A complex institution will have defined roles and responsibilities, rules, protocols, and traditions. • Examples • Religion • Government • Education • Medicine • Military • Etc.

  5. Record Keeping • Usually involves a system of writing • Societies must keep track of many things: • Rulers measure food supplies stored in city • Business transactions & product labels • Census (official count of people) • Inheritance, property, land holdings, etc. • Important stories – religious, historical, etc.

  6. Improved Technology • Societies advance as people learn better ways to do things • New and better tools • New and better materials • New and better methods (of building, transporting, recording, ruling, thinking, etc.) • New knowledge
