Certificate • A certificate is granted by an approved college after the completion of a 1 year (2 semesters) program • Must be approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) • Usually certificates are in addition to a diploma • E.g. insurance, law clerks, maintenance, medical, payroll management, property management, aesthetics
What is a CollegeDiploma? • Granted by the MTCU after 2 years (4 semesters) of study • Advanced Diplomas are a three year program at a college
What is an Applied Degree? • Usually through a college • Types:Bachelor of Applied Arts, Bachelor of Applied Business and Bachelor of Applied Technology • E.g Fields of study are: Early Childhood Leadership, Construction Science, Hospitality Operations, Financial Services, Nursing • “Must have college admission standards” • “Not duplicate a university program” (no research emphasis) • “Standards same as universities – more breadth, depth of learning, strong outcome standards” (greater rigour than diploma) • Taken from http://www.tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/discussi/degree/degree-consult.html
What is a Degree? Four, five or six year academic programs conferred by a university after a course of study. Emphasis is on theory and research Most common are Bachelor, Honours Bachelor and Master degree E.g. Arts, Fine Arts, Business, Science

Certification can take from 2-5 years to become a certified journeyperson.
