What is a Fairy Tale? • Is a type of short story that features a folkloric fantasy characters. • Characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, dwarves, giants, mermaids and gnomes. • Typically stories involve magic and enchantments. • They are different from folk narratives and legends.
Famous Fairy Tale Authors • The Brothers Grimm • Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm. • Published- Cinderella, The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Snow White, and many more.
Famous Fairy Tale Authors • Hans Christian Anderson • Lived from 1805 to 1875. • Was Danish • Best Known for his Fairy tales. • His published works have been translated into 125 different languages.
Robin Hood • Tale about famous heroic outlaw in English Folklore. • Started in the 19th century • Known for robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. • Takes place in medieval England.
Little Red Riding Hood • Is a French fairy tale. • Deal with a young girl trying to help her grandma and a big bad wolf. • Today it has many different types of adaptations.
Cinderella • Is a very famous fairy tale through out the world. • First published in 1697 by Charles Perrault in the HistoiresouContes du Temps Passe. • Has many different variations throughout the world.
Beauty and the Beast • Is a traditional fairy tale. • First published version was by Gabrielle Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740. • Widely known across Europe in different variations. • Most popular form is the Disney version.
The Little Mermaid • Created by author Hans Christian Anderson in 1837. • Has been adapted to various styles and media throughout the times. • Also known as the Little Sea lady.
The Three Little Pigs • First printed version dates back to 1840’s. • Story is much older then the printed version. • Deals with 3 pigs dealing with a big bad wolf who is trying to eat the pigs.
Hansel and Gretel • Is a well known fairy tale stemming from German origin. • Recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. • Deals with brother and sister trying to escape from evil witch. • Many different adaptations.
Pinocchio • Published in 1883 by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. • Fictional character created by a wood carver named Geppetto. • Teaches valuable lesson about telling the truth.
Alice in Wonderland • Originally known as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. • Was published in 1865 by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. • This story deals with logic and helps appeal to adult readers.
The Frog Prince • Is best known as a Brothers Grimm written version. • It was the first story in their collections.
