Approach recommenders as advisers • Don’t just ask your recommenders to write a letter, as for them to advise you • Recommenders will do a much better job writing about you if they know about your plans and if they’ve looked over your application. • Begin building relationships with professors before you need the letter.
Ask someone who knows you well • The best recommendations are personal, with specific details. • It isn’t worth it to ask someone who doesn’t know you just because they are important.
Ask Early • Professors are people, and often they are very busy. • Professors will be annoyed if you ask them for a letter at the last minute, and they also won’t have much time to devote to your letter. • People write better letters when they have more time and are not annoyed. • So, ask ASAP!
Always ask professors if they feel comfortable writing you a letter • It is better to hear from the professor that she doesn’t want to write you a letter rather than to have a lukewarm letter • Professors are usually honest – if they don’t feel like they can write you a good letter, they won’t do it – but only if you ask.
Schedule an appointment with your professor • Set an appointment so that you can discuss the scholarship’s criteria and how you fulfill the criteria. • Professors will write better letters if they know what the scholarship is looking for.
Bring to the Meeting: • A current resume • A copy of your completed application material • A reminder of projects/assignments that you completed for the professor • A copy of your transcript • An official description of the award’s criteria • Any material that is to accompany the recommendation (cover letter, forms, etc.) • Be sure you have waived your right to read the letter!
also bring: • An addressed, stamped envelope (unless the letter is to be submitted online – in this case bring instructions) • The name of the person to whom the letter should be addressed • Whether the letter should be mailed or returned to you • The deadline! (Be sure to differentiate between received by and postmark)
Be sure to Write your Recommenders Thank you notes! • Your momma would be proud.
