  3. Why do we write letters? • Help our students achieve their goals. • Clarify the student’s character and obstacles they’ve overcome. • Fulfill expectations. • Give a good representation of the student’s limitations and talents. • BE A STUDENT ADVOCATE!

  4. Why else? 42% of Admissions Counselors say that the Counselor recommendation is of Moderate Importance

  5. To whom do we write? • Admissions Counselors • Private Schools • Public Schools • Scholarship Administrators • Sports Programs • HR/Business Owners

  6. 4 out of 5 Admissions Officers say… • Keep it short, sweet, and simple! • Follow the same general format. • BE HONEST and forthright. • Tell a story.

  7. What should I cover? • Distinguishing characteristics (tell a story!) • Academic qualities and achievements (not a resume!) • Significant extracurricular activities (not a list!) • Explain your student’s particular quirks (highs/lows) • Explain your school’s particular quirks (why!) • Admissions counselors count on our professional distance and judgment (be honest!) • If you can’t write a good one, DON’T DO IT!

  8. How can we be most efficient? • Keep reference records of what kinds of letters and for whom. • Spreadsheets? • Lists? • Ask for background & details from students/teachers. • Worksheet/Form • Interview • Resume • CUT & PASTE!! • SHORT AND SWEET!!

  9. YOUR TURN! • Enrique wants to attend a prestigious university. He has good grades, except for 2nd semester Sophomore year, when his family was going through a messy divorce. How can you explain this issue without crossing boundaries? • Lucinda has the resume of a high-school all-star—good grades, involved in everything. However, you don’t know her very well. What can you do?
