The ProjectInternal Assessment Mathematical Studies
Step 1 – Choose and Plan Choose an area to investigate • This can be of your own devising or from the list of ideas given by your teachers • Think carefully about the data you will require – is it going to be easy to collect? • Decide on the TITLE of your project • State the task – this means ‘write your plan’
Step 2- Collect the Data • Once you have chosen your project theme, you will need to start collecting the data. • This can be from the Internet or library books (secondary data) or direct measurement(primary data). • You must credit ALL data sources fully. • You must collect a suitable amount of data – not too little, not too much. Discuss how and why you chose the data you did.
Step 3 - Analyse the Data • This is where you will carry out the calculations required – measures of central tendency and spread, strength of correlation, measures of independence etc. • You will also create diagrams, tables, charts and graphs to illustrate your data – bar, pie, scatter, pictograms, histograms, box-and-whisker etc. These are examples of the calculations/diagrams you COULD include – not exhaustive lists
Step 4 - Evaluate • You must use your charts and calculations from Step 3 to compare, discuss, deduce, interpret, hypothesise, conclude and justify. • BACK UP ANY STATEMENTS YOU MAKE WITH REFERENCE TO THE STATISTICS FROM STEP 3
DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING LIKE THIS “ I enjoyed doing this project and it helped me learn a lot about height and weights of Grade 7 students. To improve it I would do more calculations and draw more diagrams”
Step 5 – Finishing Off • You must credit all data sources, and any books you use, especially if you quote directly from them • You must sign the project to confirm that it is your own work. • Your project should not exceed 2000 words - do a final wordcount. • Check your project against the seven assessment criteria given on the blog.
Finally…. Hand it in on time There are penalties for missed deadlines.
A few points to remember… • If we suspect you have plagiarised any part of the project, the penalties will be severe and could seriously affect your whole IB course • You will lose marks for including calculations or diagrams that are inappropriate/irrelevant • Include one full sample calculation for each process used, even if you have used a spreadsheet. • It is a good idea to work with the assessment criteria at every stage of your project
